With an increasing concern about the quality of engineering education being offered to the students, there is a need for a system of quality assurance in an educational institution. The establishment of ISO 9000 compliant quality systems represents one such methodology. This paper presents an overview of the ISO 9000 standards and provides information of the latest version of ISO 9000 (ISO 900J :2000) and how it is more acceptable to education. A general methodology for implementing ISO 9000 QMS in an educational Institution is presented. The reasons for certification, benefits and limitation faced in getting the ISO 9000 certification have been discussed ,based on experience and the research literature available which can help Institutions going for ISO 9000 certification to progress on this path.- Quality Management Movement in Higher Education

Higher education programs and the institutions for higher education in India are required to run the courses, degree programs and the overall education institution as per certain specified standards, prescribed by the government Agencies-NAAC under UGC and NBA under AICTE. The educational systems, operations and the processes are reviewed and monitored by NAAC and NBA. Indian higher education institutions are complying with the requirements of these quality assessment bodies. ISO is an International organization for standardization, which was mainly started for the manufacturing industries. Subsequently, it was extended to service industries and now extended to cater to all kinds of industry sectors including the education sector.
This article mainly deals with the objectives and aims of these three organizations and the procedure followed by them to certify the educational institutions/colleges for quality. The parameters considered for the measurement of performance of the education program/institution are also given to elaborate the work procedure. Finally, differences are brought out and are given in a tabular to get the comparative view of these professional organizations.

This study concentrates on engineering education in the sub continental part of the fast developing Asian country, India. The study helps in finding out the perception of education stakeholders about the quality in engineering education. It is proposed to validate or otherwise, the following hypotheses. The hypotheses are
1. Student feed back about the education process contributes significantly towards enhancing the quality of education
2. A clear mission, objective and commitment of the management towards satisfaction of the stakeholders in the institute is necessary to improve the quality of education in the institute
3. Research Development and Training activities through faculty development programs goes a long way towards enhancing quality of education.
Real time data has been collected from different engineering colleges of one of the states of the fast developing country, India. The data is from 10 colleges with different background based on location, age and students' gender. Results indicate the factors responsible for governing the quality of education and the perception of stakeholders about the same.
